According to the Centers For Disease Control “Falls have become the leading cause of injury and death for seniors”. Falls are the number one cause of accidentals deaths in the elderly. Over half of the elderly over the age of 80 will fall this year. An issue related to falls is dizziness. A person that has episodes of dizziness has a more than 10 times greater chance of falling. Also, dizziness is a leading reason why people over the age of 75 see a physician.
There are several factors that may contribute to dizziness. Medications, issues with blood pressure and vestibular disorders (inner ear problems) are the main factors. It is important to consult a health care provider to determine the cause of dizziness. Most issues with dizziness can be resolved which will improve ones fall risk.
