A Congenital Deformity (one that is acquired at birth) can be significant or significantly mild. This type of deformity can be fairly common. Some estimate that only about one in five individuals have a completely normal back consisting of a normal spinal column when viewed by X-Ray or other radiographic procedures.
The majority of congenital problems occur in the low back, however, only a small number actually cause the individuals difficulties.
Some insignificant deformities include:
- Spina Bifida Occulta
- Variations in the number of vertebrae in the spinal column
- Variations in the way some of the vertebrae meet.
These deformities seldom involve low back pain, but occasionally symptoms may be present.
