Because the knee is a large weight bearing joint it can encounter injuries and pain. Previously we reviewed the importance of muscle strength and knee range of motion.
The way you walk is also important to maintaining a healthy knee. If you walk with too long of a stride or with your knee in excessive flexion (bending) you may cause your body weight to be moved from the structures designed to handle this weight to other structures of your knee. This can cause tendonitis, swelling, tears and knee pain.
It is important to maintain flexibility and strength in your ankles and hips also. A deviation in their normal movement can affect the stress on your knee.
As always, a good exercise program performed properly that includes warmup, flexibility, strengthening and endurance will benefit you in maintaining a healthy pain free knee.
