Iliotibial Band

Sometimes you may experience pain on the outside of your knee after running or walking.  This could be Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome or IT Band Syndrome. This occurs when the band of connective tissue rubs on the outside of your knee.  It is due to the tightness of the IT Band and muscles you use to move your hip and leg out to the side.  You may experience pain walking or running uphill or downhill, but more likely downhill. Pain is experienced right before your heel strikes the floor.

IT Band Syndrome may be caused by improper walking mechanics involving the hip, knee or foot.  Muscles about the hip and thigh may become shortened.  Pain modalities, stretching and myofascial massage can help decrease the pain.  You also need to work on a general strengthening program for the hip and leg muscles.
