REMEMBER a tendon is a thick bendable tissue that connects muscle to bone. There are two tendons that run from the back of your thumb down the side of your wrist. When you have swelling and irritation of these two tendons it leads to a condition called De Quervain’s tendinitis.
Some activities that can lead to De Quervain’s include:
- The constant lifting of children which can put strain on the tendons in the wrist.
- Various sports such as tennis and golf.
If you have De Quervain’s tendinitis, you may notice:
- Pain on the back of your thumb when you make a fist, grab something, or turn your wrist
- Numbness in the thumb and index finger
- Swelling of the wrist
- Stiffness when moving your thumb or wrist
Active rest, ice and general strengthening can help resolve the pain associated with this type of tendinitis.
