Peripheral Neuropathy can cause a balance deficit. Signs and symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy depend on what type of nerve is affected. The three main types of nerves are sensory, motor and autonomic. Sensory nerves are associated with pain, numbness and other senses. Motor nerves are associated with movement and autonomic nerves are associated with the control of internal organs and blood pressure.
Peripheral Neuropathy can affect anyone or a combination of all three of these nerve types. Symptoms usually begin gradually and are experienced in a glove-like or stocking-like pattern and usually both sides of the body are affected. Because both extremities are affected versus just one extremity, one can usually distinguish between neuropathy and a spinal cord lesion.
