Continuous exercise that raises your heart rate (the number of times your heart beats per minute) to a level appropriate for your age and maintained for at least 20 minutes is called Aerobic Exercise.
During this type of exercise you do not stop the activity for periods of time which would allow your heart rate to decrease. Walking, running, swimming, Aerobic dance, bicycling and jumping rope are some examples. During these activities you are continuously moving.
So to realize the benefits of aerobic activity, you should maintain your desired heart rate for at least 20-30 minutes. As with any exercise, if you are just starting, begin slowly after being cleared by your Health Care Professional.
