Chomdromalacia Patella

Running injuries occur with over training, improper warm-up or stretching, poor running mechanics, or from a previous injury which causes muscle weakness.  Most of these injuries can be avoided.  For instance, Chomdromalacia Patella is a condition affecting the cartilage of the underside of the kneecap.  It can be caused from a microtrauma from repeated bending of the knee while using improper running mechanics.

Chomdromalacia Patella can be associated with:

  • A dull, aching pain which becomes a sharp pain in the front of the knee
  • A grinding feeling under the kneecap
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness with squatting, bending or going up stairs

or a feeling that the leg may buckle

The prognosis for Chomdromalacia Patella is good with the proper exercise routine and rest from running.
