Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease is the deterioration of the shock absorber found between the vertebral bodies in our spine, the Intervertebral Disc.  As the disc degenerates, The space between the joints decrease and stability is lost. Back pain is chronic and occasionally some leg pain can be present.  However, the pain in a Degenerative Disc issue is usually muscle related.

One can experience muscle spasms in the lower back along with low back pain.  The pain is thought to be from inflammation as well as stress places on the involved joint.  Usually the degeneration is found in the lower back area.

Treatment for Degenerative Disc Disease includes a combination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications along with treating the muscle spasms,  Lower back strengthening, and a lifting mechanical program.
